It was a bit jarring. Did anyone have any input on this decision? Are we planting two in their place?

Daryl:  We hate it too but both trees were diseased.  We've also had two on Canal Blvd that Parks and Parkways removed because they were diseased and feared they would fall on park visitors.  We had several arborists look at the trees to see if we could save them.  We have planted 30 new live oaks in the neighborhood to replace trees downed by storms and disease.  We've also pruned both parks.  We have launched a Love our Oaks campaign to help us in caring for our beautiful oak canopy -- it isn't cheap!

I'd love to tell you more just give me a call at 504 284-8031.  Happy to answer any questions.  We will also be having a meeting with an arborist Monday August 5th to discuss and share our plan for pruning over time.  I hope you'll join us.  We'll also be hosting a fundraiser for our oaks later this fall.

I also see you're interested in beautification.  We're starting a beautification committee--would you like to join that.  It would entail weeding front entryway on canal--I'll be doing some edging--I also put roundup on the weeds---making sure culverts are cleared of debris and picking up an trash, tree debris down Canal Blvd.  Would love to talk with you more if you're willing to serve!  Please let me know.  sonyaduhe@gmail.com

Sonya, Thank you for the considerate and detailed response. I did not fully appreciate the situation. I am glad to hear that arborists looked at the oaks prior and that their removal was not due to an uninformed decision from city hall. I will be sure to get in touch. Thank you for all that you do. Best, Daryl
